Creative Thank You

On this day of giving thanks for the graces we have that allow us to exist and to live so well, I want to count among those blessings the fact that I live in a very interesting and creative area of the country, and that the future of this area will continue to be bright if we appreciate and support the creative community that makes the vitality of our area possible. I know many people would consider that the artistic community may be in many ways frivolous in light of people losing jobs, livelyhoods and their homes, however, this community has many times over proven that creativity is recession proof and is an economic powerhouse that when nurtured properly, will yield dividends beyond measure.

A Palin Reading Sendoff

A Palin Book Reading at the Fishtank
IMG_5545
A little bit of fun was had at the expense of the former Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States at the Fishtank Thursday evening. The festivities began at 7 pm with different people taking the stage and reading segments of Sarah Palin's new book Going Rogue.  With mentions of certain words or phrases, such as the names of Palin's children or Ronald Reagan, a bell was rung and everyone took a drink of whatever beverage they had on hand.  Many of the people doing the reading were dressed as Palin, and were in character as they read the passages from the book.  Behind them was projected photos of the object of their mirth.

Around the corner, a bit of a performance was taking place at Peggy Noland's shop as busses loaded with Catholic school kids passed by on 18th street....

Barclay Martin, 1st Friday Artwalk for November, Charlotte Street Foundation, Skinny Dipping

BARCLAY MARTIN CD RELEASE CONCERT
SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2009

An audience of about 1200 people were treated to a concert by Barclay Martin at the Johnson County Community College campus.  The occasion was the release of the soundtrack album for an upcomming documentary called Zamboanga, Poverty, War, Music.  The documentary was shot in the southern Philippines, and is part of the efforts of an organization called the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.  The show was a very moving inspirational experience, especially since many people in the audience had experienced the type of poverty displayed in some of the movie clips first hand.  To view more clips uploaded by CFCA, go here, here and here.  I found the concert to be near and dear to my heart due to my marriage to a filipina, and to the fact that my mother in law, Amelita Villacarlos Paradela is engaged in a similar effort to help poor children in her home town of Madridejos.  I can't resist to put in a personal plug for her school with some clips of my own...
