Philippines 2010 Day 4

Sunday 24 October 2010

At the center of almost every filipino town is a catholic church, and at the center of almost every filipino's life, is religion.

Some say that the Philippines main export is Filipinos.  The government sponsors and Overseas Guest Worker program that exports labor all over the world, mainly to the middle east.  In return, filipinos get an opportunity to earn money and send it back home to their families.  My brother in law is no exception.  He is working as an engineer in Dubai.  He is building his dream home for his family here in the Philippines from a design he made.

Philippines 2010 Day 3

Ready for a bike ride to pick up the truck at the body builders

It is common in a cash strapped economy to make things last longer than their normal life expectancy, and/or to fabricate stuff yourself.  Such is the life of vehicles in this country.  Today we visit a body builder to pick up the family truck, a 1996 Mazda pickup.  The body has been completely redone.  While there, we interview the owner about his business and his art.

Jeepneys are very colorful works of art and individual expression, often mimicking popular phrases, songs or movies in their designs -- a virtual art car parade in a bus.
