Route 66: Lebanon to Carthage, Missouri

Route 66 Detour

When you are traveling among friends, you are never alone.  If you do not have any friends when you begin your journey on Route 66, you will have a lot of friends when you finish.  That cannot be said of many other modes of travel.  People come to the route because of the journey, and the journey often takes you home.  Everyone is searching for "it", whatever "it" is.  There is this spiritual itch that is always there.... always driving us somewhat crazy.  We all know the feeling of being perfectly alone in a crowd.  Oftentimes that crowd is herding somewhere -- to the tourist mecca, the mall, the megalomaniac store or church, to the arena or venue.  More than one person has said to themselves that though rediculous it may seem, the voyage there was more exciting than the actual there.  The only problem with the passage was that a lot of stuff that was bypassed seemed more interesting than the endpoint of the journey and "boy we should go back and see that some day."  For many people, someday never seems to come.

Another icon of the route is the camel on the Campbell 66 express sign.  Usually there was a caption that said "humpin' to please.  There is a story behind this sign...

A junk store full of stuff stacked from floor to rafters is heaven to me.  A Second Time Around Shoppe on Glenstone in Springfield, Missouri was full of old signs and other neat unexplainable vitage items and antiques.

Boots Motel, Carthage, Missouri
When we came through here at the end of April, we started in Carthage and walked around the ample town square.  On the way through, we took a snap shot of the Boots Motel, but didn't stop.
April 2012 -- Route 66:  Getting There; Carthage, Missouri to Afton, Oklahoma.
The point of this trip was to extend our exploration of the route in Missouri on a day trip.  This time we ended in Carthage, and checked out some of the sights we missed, especially the Boots.

As I was taking my photos, I noticed the neon came on.  I knew it was similar to the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari when the owner saw me taking pictured and turned the neon on for me.  Debra Dee, the manager of the motel came out to greet me and offered me a free tour.  I knew Suyen was in a bit of a hurry so I got her.  We slowed down and enjoyed another great moment on the route.

Boots Motel Tour, July 13, 2012

I love this mid-century modern building next door to the boots.

Mr. Boots built a drive-inn across the street from the motel.
The building still exists that had the drive inn.  It is now a credit Union.

Route 66 sodas and boot shaped glasses are some of the souvenirs you can buy at the Boots gift shop.

Debbie Dee told us this was one of the rooms that Clark Gable stayed in.  It is undergoing restoration.  The restoration process we are told is painstaking as there is a process for proper restoration in respect to the historic nature of the structure.
Debbie Dee showing Suyen and I around the Boots Motel.

Suyen is looking in one of the restored rooms in the later 1940's section of the motel that can be rented.

There is a radio in every room.  This one is a reproduction as the originals are hard to find.  In one of the other rooms the radio is authentic.  There is a local radio station that plays 30's through 60''s music.
Framed sheet music is in every room.

This radio is in a bedside stand.  I think this is fancy.

I like the mid century modern table.

Debbie Dee is taking us on a tour of the bueatifully detailed and restored rooms.
Debra Harvey, one of the two sisters who owns and is in the process of saving and restoring the motel.

We took some portraits for another memorable end to our exploration of this part of route 66.

After Bennett Spring and Carthage we took enjoyed the weather on the trip back.
