We headed west on Central out of Albuquerque. Central, which is als Historic US 66 comes to a major intersection with Atrisco Vista Boulevard. We turned right and headed north across the highway on an overpass to the I-40 west Frontage road. We climbed out of the valley to Mesa Oeste.

Ghost Bridge by the Laguna Reservation Route 66 Casino

Rio Puerco Bridge now being served by ghosts, as the highway has bypassed the bridge by a few feet and the outer road, which is old 66 also goes around the bridge.

We stayed on Westbound I-40 until we came to the exit for Indian Service Route 54/491. We turned right off the exit onto Indian Service Route 53, then made the next left on the outer road which is a nice segment of the old route which meanders around past owl rock. This road becomes state route 124 as you come into Laguna, New Mexico.

This section of route 66, which meanders around a mesa, is one of the great scenic spots. This view is the exit off of 40 at Mesita.

We got back on the highway at State Highway 124 and I-40. We left I-40 at 117/Historic US 66.

State Highway 117/East Santa Fe Avenue intersects US 66, and you are in Grants, New Mexico. US 66 eventually becomes 122. This is a 4 lane divided highway that heads west out of Grants. This road eventually becomes a two lane as it becomes the frontage road for I-40.
Grants, New Mexico is one of those towns that has a nice collection of googie signs and architecture. Some pass through, we are going to have to stop, and look around. Grants to Gallup has some of the best icons to be found on route 66.

West of Gallup, Historic US 66 becomes I-40 Frontage road/Defiance Draw Road. We turned left at County road 32/116, then right after crossing under I-40. This is Rocky Point road/116 on the south side of I-40. This eventually crosses over I-40.
