An opinion about "Modern Communication" -- a piece of public art at 12th and Locust, Kansas City Missouri by Terry Allen
I can't help but think that many who pass by the statue titled "modern communication," which sits in front of the communications building next to the Kansas City Missouri police headquarters at 12th and Locust downtown, might not chuckle out loud, or maybe whisper an amen as they nod in agreement with the sentiment. As far as art goes "Modern Communication" broadcasts its message with the power and subtlety of a sledgehammer blow right between the eyes. It is almost as if the artist intended to cast a bumper sticker in bronze. Art is often defined as an attempt to communicate a message or feeling through a visual medium. "Modern Communication" succeeds at doing this, albeit in an overtly obvious way. Does this mean that the message overpowers the work? Lets just say that I believe in an admittedly rather and subjective way that this piece achieves the artists goal of putting a smile on everyones face in a serious plot of Kansas City real estate. I would also like to think that people who pass by this public art from the judges to the attorneys to the officers in uniform to the patrons can't help but think that this piece puts a human face on a city that is able to poke a little fun at itself. In such a heavy environment it is nice to know that there is an effort to lighten up the mood. So, to those who think this art should be removed, I have to say one thing... please lighten up.
