Passing Through to a Place We've Never Been
I thought the chilies might be some that fell from a truck, but on closer examination, I found that there was no such luck. The chilies were over ripe and some had mold growing on them. I grabbed a few that seemed ok.

We visited Santa Fe, briefly just to see what's there. Our friends due to our own poor timing couldn't visit with us, so we decided that since we had been in Albuquerque before, we were just going to pass through so we could spend more time in places we hadn't been to before out west beyond Holbrook, Arizona. Our goal was to make Holbrook by evening and stay in the Wigwam motel there. We drove the route as we were guided by our gps into downtown, then opted for the newer route out of town to the west, instead of heading south, then north on the old, pre 1938 route....
We left Santa Fe at the place where we parked on Lincoln Avenue south of the Federal courthouse. We turned left on South Federal place, then left again on Grant Avenue. Grant came to a T at El Camino Real, and we turned left and followed the curver around to the south on Sandoval Street. Sandoval merges with 14 and heads southwest. 14 is also known at Turquoise Trail. We took this to Veteran's Memorial Hiway, and turned right. Then, immediately at the next left we turned onto east frontage road. This parallels Interstate 25 towards the southwest. At Waldo Canyon road, we crossed over the ram to the north side and exited onto I-25. We exited at 315, and headed northwest. At the T intersection we turned left on 313.

As we turned left on 313, I noticed a bunch of red chilies that had been thrown in the road. I had to stop to grab some.

Somebody dumped some perfectly good moldy chilies on the side of the road... |
They looked better when we passed by them.... should've kept on going. |
313 is known as El Camino Real. We passed into the town of Algodones.
Algodones, New Mexico
313/El Camino Real continues on towards the southwest. We next pass through the Santa Anna Pueblo.

313 continues to the southwest past Sandia Pueblo. It takes a bend further to the west, before hitting a traffic circle at Roy Avenue, Northeast. You continue towards the southwest on El Camino Real/313. Then the road bends more to the south as you are in the northern outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

El Camino Real Continues towards the southwest and takes you straight downtown. At Roma Avenue Northwest, we drove east about one block before continuing on El Camino Real at the next right. We intersected Central Avenue Southwest and turned right, or west. This becomes Route 66 which is clearly marked and takes you out of downtown and to the west across the Rio Grande and west out of town climbing a gradual grade which reveals the whole city as you do so.

Kicks 66 in Western Albuquerque, where we got some good advice. |
We were hungry. When you are traveling, often you find yourself faced with a choice with little information. I always prefer local color to chain blandness. We stopped to get some fuel before facing the miles between exits of western New Mexico. Suyen went in and found the guy behind the counter to be very friendly and helpful. He guided us to one of the coffee shops we just passed. It turned out to be a good piece of advice.

We had an excellent dining experience at Mac's. The food was really good and priced well. The ambience is authentic route 66 without the tourist stuff.

As we left Albuquerque on the old route 66 out of town to the west, one of the best vistas appear in the rear view mirror. In the dry desert air, you can see for miles, and Albuquerque comes completely into view. We had to stop to get some pictures.
