Route 66 Adventure: Chicago

Suyen is feeling house proud in the Navion fixing us brekkus....
She took the pictures as I walked the dawgs...
Bewildered look at brekkus....
Doggies chillaxin after the walk.....
Dawgs, cawfee and route 66...
Posing for our "relaxing at camp" picture....
None of the following pictures are posed....😏
Looking happy!😂
Driving out of our first camp ground....

Taking the Interstate to get to the start of the route...  The Interstate is the best way to get there on wheels but the worst way to see the USA...
I forgot to included a map of yesterdays route....
See the USA in your.... Navion!
When we traveled cross country as kids in 1973 (including parts of route 66) this was a jingle I remember us singing on the way....
Coming into Chicagoland....
Hey Jim!  You sleeping????
Gettin' there!
Before we carried our own porta potty, this is a common pose until we could find a rest area or gas station...

View from the back....
One of the handiest conveniences on the road... let me tell you.....
The princess awakes!
Dog is my co-pilot....
Chicago!
Where we were trying to park per Nomadic Fanatic, but all the spots were taken....

We did find parking close by and around the corner from the start of route 66, which was amazing.  However, we paid a lot of money, (for us) for only three hours of parking, so we had to do Shee cah goe on a whirlwind tour and on tired feet....  It was also hot this day....
First the waterfront and the pier.  I had a goal in mind (pier to pier on route 66).
Philippine consulate in downtown Chicago, which was the goal of our last trip here.  I had to go in circles until Suyen's business was done the parking was so bad here.....
This is a real camera with a real lens giving a real depth of field effect, and not an effect trick... (iPhone I'm calling you out)!
On our way to the Navy pier...
Still amazed by our parking spot and ready for action!
Start of route 66 -- It Begins!
Artsy fartsy shot....
Doggies on 66!
and of course, making friends....
Walking in the Chicago loop...
Posing at the Navy Pier...
Sky scrapers...
iPhone depth effect....
Jimothy contemplating the water front.  I think this is the biggest body of water he has ever seen!
Stella's been to the water before....
Urban safari!

Navy pier!

The long trek back, which is sort of a race as we were trying to get back to the Navion before we got a ticket...
Interesting architecture...
We couldn't have found a better parking spot, but its a bit of a panic as we were 20 minutes late.... fortunately no ticket....
We tracked our walk using our phone tracker.  The orange line is our planned route west on Route 66...
It doesn't look like a long walk, but with stops, it was...

Dog tired ... FLOP!
Suyen created these montages...
And we're off!

I try to snap googie on the way....
McCooks googie sign looks familiar, somehow...
This detour pisses me off.....
and begins the drive ins and kitsch....
Joliet, which used to be called Juliet.  There is a Romeoville close by....
Screen grab as we pass by the home of the Blues Brothers.....
Joliet has a nice downtown.  We didn't stop though...
Uhg!   I thought we were done with this.  Traffic was actually due to the bridge opening for river traffic...

After you leave the Chicago area, the route becomes a picturesque 4 lane US highway, which is in many areas the outer road for the nearby interstate...
The best time to drive for me is at dusk.  The weather is usually very pleasant and the light is gorgeous.  It is a time to reflect and meditate on the beauty around you....
Sunset on 66!
On the way up, I noticed a sign for a 4H county campground outside Pontiac Illinois.  I figured this would be a good stop, and a great place to begin as I wanted to visit the museum when it was open.
Suyen loves the Navions kitchen...
Our tracker map of our journey so far...
