I've been told that along the east side of Cebu, the Japanese tried to build a railroad during their occupation here in world war II to haul fish south for the troops from the fertile fishing waters up north. The grade for the never completed railroad can be seen on the shoreline.
The bus station, where busses stop to let their passengers get out and eat, is called, ironically, the North Pole.
