We went to Achison for the 17th annual Festival held in honor of Amelia Earhart, who grew up there. This year the flooding Missouri river has taken away the grounds where the festival and fireworks show happen away.
It was depressing to see downtown so empty.
The carnival rides downtown was the only sign of activity downtown.
There were events held throughout the two day festival. The main event -- the fireworks display, which is a good one every year, was moved to lake Wolnock outside of town.
Before we went to the lake to the fireworks which draw people from all over the US, we went by the birhtplace of Amelia Earhart, which was her home.
The people of Atchison did a great job adapting to the situation. We enjoyed our time there and look forward to next year.
