Book Release and Showing of the KC Mob Documentary at Screenland Armour

I have mixed emotions about doing coverage of organized crime in Kansas City. On the one hand it is a morbidly fascinating subject, but on the other hand when I think of the soul sucking community destroying livlihoods of gangsters, it turns my stomach. River Quay in Kansas City was a great hope for a new urban movement in this area, and after a few mob members were through with the Quay, citizens of KC were scared away for more than 20 years. Blowing up people and buildings today would be classified as terrorism. My morbid fascination with the subject matter lead me to the book release party/screening of the documentary Black Hand/Strawman, by Terence O'Malley. The book and documentary are as detailed as most people would want to get about the seedy undersided of Kansas City's history. It is a subject matter that must be studied and understood, because, unfortunately, too much of what we are today is limited by our past. One money quote I heard this evening was that Kansas City is much like a former lady of the evening who would rather not talk about her past. I think that is so true.
