Route 66: Holbrook, Arizona to Albuquerque, New Mexico

We Made New Friends and We Come Back to Visit Old Friends

A week is not long enough.  We reached a realistic goal of making it to Arizona on route 66.  We had to skip past a few miles of road and a few landmarks, but we made this a memorable trip.  Now it is time to turn back, unfortunately, and we don't want to.  As a matter of fact, we've already hatched a plan for our next trip.  So what made this so memorable was meeting people along the way, like the current owner of the Wigwam Village # 6, and son of the original owner and builder.  We did not expect to meet the owners, but just as we were leaving (as a matter of fact, the car was loaded and running and I was about to sit in the drivers seat to take off) we saw this guy coming into the court with a pickup truck loaded with dogs.  It was the dogs that drew our attention.  He got out looking either a little lost or very familiar, so I asked him if he were checking in.  He said, no, I own this place.  It turned out he was Clifton Lewis.  He was very nice and was willing to talk on camera...  I think you can hear in the interview why traveling this way is becoming so popular and what the road has meant to generations of Americans.

We are checking out.  Nice morning.  I tslked to a French motorcycle club touring route 66 on Harleys.  Europeans love americana and american history, even if americans dont.
On the way out, we met the owner.  He is the son of the man who built the Wigwam Village #6 here in 1950.

One long main street ... in deed!  Do you see the corvette?  Do you see the Blue Swallow Motel t-shirt?  Coincidence???? NOPE!  This woman was our neighbor last night in the Blue Swallow Motel.  She is saying Hi to Tima who she be-friended.  Most people don't have a choice when it comes to being friends with Tima.  She told us she is touring route 66 on her own in her corvette.

I like the later coupes that came out in the early 50's, but a lot of people, even if they don't know much about Studebakers know of or remember the "bullet noses" of the early 50's.  The front of the car was made to resemble airplanes of world war II.

The bullet of the bullet nose and the v-8 badge on the Studebaker Commander... The V was adapted for advertising during the 50's and 60's to imply power and importance.  That is why you will see huge v vectors in old signage that was usually lit in colorful neon to point the way to some roadside oasis of some sort or other.  The "v" could be the wings of a fast jet or the tail fins of a rocket taking you somewhere fast, or the v in an engine, also taking you somewhere fast and modern.  I want to invent a kids game sort of like slug bug, but instead, when you see a vector you poke your brother/sister and say "VECTOR!"
That is "studestevo" NOT Stud Stevo....

The red tow truck is supposed to be "Mater"  There's lots of debate on who the real "Mater" is.   I will not dive into that one.  I'd prefer to think that much like the road itself, the movie was more or less a composite of the experience, much the way most people remember the route in their retellings of their impressions.

We met our friend, Mark at the Albuquerque dog park, which is right next door to his work place.  I used to work with Mark in Kansas City.  He works in Albuquerque, but resides in Santa Fe.  He invited us to stay in the apartment he and his partner keep in Albuqueque which is their home away from home when the work is late and the drive too hazardous.  We drove through town to the Nob Hill neighborhood, where the apartment -- a former motel room is.

Mark and Russells Albuquerque apartment
Mark had to go back to Santa Fe, but he got us settled in before he left.  We thank Mark and Russell for their hospitality and are very sorry we didn't get to see Russ on this trip.
Here is a video I did on our last trip through the area of Russells organization...
