The life of an artist is not an easy one. Security is often sacrificed for the right to give of oneself to others. What is given is priceless. What is recieved in return is often finite and extremely limited. Artists are a grace in our world. That much should be acknowledged and not judged harshly, but too often is never noticed and given extreme criticism. Anyone who has been around KC for long has probably been graced by the music of such an artist. Arnold Youngs virtuosity on the drum kit cannot be easily surpassed. He has dedicated his life to his passion and given much of himself. I met him when he played at the YJ's jazz jam with the Micah Herman Quartet. I often enjoy hearing his stories and listening him tell of music history that he has lived. I came across this in YJ's today. I donated some money to help him out. I think that any local music lover should dig deep and help out. Artists such as Arnold have given their all to make the world a more brilliant place to be in. It is very little to ask for some return for the grace we have been given freely. All you have to do is go to YJ's and put some money in the plastic container at the bar there. Please, give what you can for an artist who has given you all they have.

The America's Best Value Inn was something else when I stayed a night there. Back then I was entering the military, and this was a low rent motel the government used for billeting recruits. I remember the bed had minimal thin sheets, a tiny airplane pillow, poorly ventilated rooms which were too cold and too hot, and constant traffic noise coming through the windows facing Broadway which made it impossible to sleep. Meals were provided by Chubby's, which picked us up in a 15 passenger Dodge Van. This was back in 1990.
