We have spent the night in Williams in a place called el Rancho Motor Lodge. it's a good old school Motel nothing fancy. I went on a nice little 2 mile run in Williams. The town hasn't woken up yet. It's pretty dead it's in the off season. They are really proud of Route 66 here. It was the last town that was by passed by the highway in October 1984. One of the only places I see open besides the Circle K downtown is a coffee house. we're planning on getting her start there and then heading on as far as we can try to make it to California by night. We're in the mountains this area which is very nice was a lot of pine forests. however I've been doing some reading and we're about to hit some really big desert it's almost daunting, the thought of it. we won't be on the highway will be in lonely stretches of Old Route 66 and there aren't many services on that part and everything seems to be abandoned - a lot of ghost towns.

We left the motel and headed west on East Bill Williams/Grand Canyon/route 66/ Railroad Avenue which. Route 66 is split through town with west bound one way on the north side and east bound one way one block south. The split merges on the west side of town and crosses under I-40, which we join at the west Williams interchange.

At crookton road (route 66) west of Ash Fork, we began our trek on some of the nicest parts of route 66 in Arizona, and some people say, on the whole road. We departed the interstate for a good long time. There are many burma shave road signs along here.

After stopping at the route 66 museum, we followed the route to the southwest through a very scenic part where it winds around and eventually becomes the outer road for I-40. We crossed over I-40 at the west Kingman exit on shinarump road (yes we snickered at the name). At the cross intersection past the highway, we turned left on Oatman road.

Oatman road leads into Oatman, and it becomes a thrilling mountain pass road which is very narrow and has many switchbacks. There are no guardrails and steep cliffs. We stopped at the cool springs trading post before we embarked west.

We followed Otaman-Topock Highway to the interchange with I-40 before California at the Colorado River. Upon entering California, you go through California customs. They were very friendly and gave Tima a milkbone. We exited I-40 at 5 Mile Road into Needles. 5 Mile Road (National Old Trails Road) joins up with US 95 west. It is also Broadway coming into town. Broadway intersects with River Road and makes a sharp left, it is still Broadway. We found our motel and called it a day.
