The weather reached record lows of about 37 degrees.  This morning as I drove in, the fog made for a very picturesque scene across the Missouri River.

Getting Cawfee before I head out.  It never fails, if you are in a hurry, people you haven't seen in a long time and you would love to catch up with all of a sudden show up and want you to visit.  I hope I wasn't perceived as rude, but I knew I had no time to really kill getting there.  I just needed some fuel for the long morning.
West to Topeka
As I headed west, I was passed by a lot of police heading to the same place.  We all showed up at the same time, apparently.
I got a nasty surprise at the turnpike.  My KTag, which usually doesn't work due to something about batteries in the KTag was up to its usual non-workingness.  No problem there, I just go through like normal, then at the other end, I give them my KTag and they ask me where I got on.  They seem to be very familiar with the problem.  On this day, however, the guy at the other end in Topeka tells me there is no money in that account and I need to pay up the $2.75, which I do with my own credit card.  So, on the way back, I guess I won't be taking the turnpike then.

The line to get in was long.
I was heralded in with all the cars from the Topeka Police Department
They ran out of parking spaces, so they parked us in the aisles.
Having no desire to spend more money on the turnpike, and having so super big rush to get back, I took old US 40 east.

Getting out of Topeka was fun.
6th street is a main east west thoroughfare through Topeka, which is US-40 through the east side of town.
East of downtown Topeka, you pass through the Oakland neighborhood.  The Santa Fe yards are on the west and north side of this neighborhood, and this is a long established hispanic neighborhood.  Hispanics were brought in in the early part of the 20th century to work on the Santa Fe railroad.  This neighborhood has a great history and a very interesting cultural tradition.
Very quickly, you are out of Topeka and into the country side heading east on old US 40.

I finally got past the turnpike and made my way to the interstate, I-70.  It says that 70/40/24 become one here, but I suspect, that historically, 40/24 ran through Kansas City Kansas via State Avenue on their way to Kansas City, Missouri across the state line.  It was probably this way until everything got bypassed by I-70 in the 1960's.
An older highway that many take for granted in Kansas City.  Southwest Boulevard/Merriam Lane. predates I-35.  It is part of the old Fort Scott to Kansas City military route and is also known as the Kansas City road in many places.  I believe at one time it was part of the western leg of the Jefferson Highway through town.

The neighborhood known as the West Side is a major hub of Hispanic culture in Kansas City Missouri.
The Kansas City crossroads neighborhood is so named because it is a crossroads of transportation between downtown and midtown and is also, historically, where many highways passed through.  It is now an arts district.  It was once an area where horses and carriages were hosteled, and later an area where a lot of cars and car parts were sold.  It was also an area where low rate motels sprung up north of Union Station.  After transportation patterns changed and people shifted from trains to cars and the car dealers moved to the suburbs, this was an are full of warehouses and empty buildings.  Cheap rent is what made this area attractive to photographers and artists.

A Visit to IKEA via the Kansas City Road
We got up and drove to Grandview to get Melba which has been sitting on a charger in the driveway since Monday.
Melba made it back home with no problem.  I put Melba on the charger at home and will take Melba to Mike's Service Center on Monday.  Suyen had to woik, so I took the doggies to Penn Valley and we went to Ikea and then to Westport.

IKEA
The Kansas City area IKEA store opened on Wednesday.  It sits on a site that was a brand new strip mall that never opened that was built and operated by the City of Merriam.  The mall was torn down to build the IKEA store.

I took the doggies for a walk in Westport, then had cawfee at Westport Coffee House
