Route 66: Sapulpa Oklahoma to Hinton Oklahoma

Route 66: Sapulpa Oklahoma to Hinton Oklahoma
The chairs were all in neat rows.  This low period of American history was to be the highlight of our day.  It is actually off the route but is a must stop for travelers of route 66.  I watched it on tv as it happened.  I knew instantly that it was probably one of the worst instances of American terrorism committed by American terrorists.  Oklahoma City is still scarred by what happened here in April 1995.  Places the route takes you such as this don't actually exist on the route, but within the wider corridor of route 66.  After all, the route, in it's heyday did not serve and an end, but a means.  People took the route to visit places.  Now our leisurely course takes us to a part of America's not to distant tragic past.

We didn't stop in Stroud this time.  However, we found an obelisk southwest of Stroud on a gravel road....
Here is a story of the obelisk I found...

Ticks, chiggers and mosquito's, Oh MY!!!
A ruin befitting the Appian Way!

This was not quite the place we expected to find such a land mark.  What is interesting is the guide that we followed seemed to travel over all era's of the route.  This is obviously an earlier era going back to the Auto trail days...

The footprint of the building is now a reflecting pool, bordered on both sides by an entry way...

The doggies were really good as always.  We feared that they may have left a 'gift' on the perfectly manicured grounds.  They didn't.
The chairs mark a person who was killed in the 1995 bombing.

The rows of chairs represent the floors on which people were killed.  Smaller chairs represent children.  Chairs outside the main body represent people who died outside of the building.

This is a quiet place.

I believe the change on the chair means that the person was a veteran...
http://bigfrog104.com/meanings-of-coins-left-on-graves/

"A penny at the grave means simply that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together. A dime means you served with the solider in some capacity. A quarter, the biggest coin, has the biggest meaning. This means when at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when they were killed.
According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans."

There isn't much you can say, or should say at a place like this.  Silent reflection is most appropriate...

It is fun to look at all the mid century signs and businesses which make the route through Oklahoma City very colorful...

El Reno Oklahoma
I have a video of the frightening weather that can be found in El Reno in the spring.  In 2013, some well known storm chasers lost their lives here...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_El_Reno_tornado
I was chasing in southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma on that day.  I only caught a wall cloud.  However, I do remember having a feeling of danger with all the storms and was extremely cautious...

The weather in Oklahoma can be frightening in the spring, especially in a rental car.  Here is video from a hail storm in El Reno in the spring of 2012....

April 2012 Visit to El Reno
http://svobodakc.blogspot.com/2012/06/route-66-el-reno-oklahoma-to-tucumcari.html

More of the route west of el Reno looks very well preserved, like it was bypassed early and lightly traveled, which give a good glimpse of what the road may have looked like in the late 40's...

Another endangered bridge on the route...

We found one of the few rest areas on the route..
Within view of here is an abandoned truck stop...

Abandoned truck stop in Hinton Oklahoma...

We decided to call it a day early with a casino nearby.  The cost to us to stay here was only 5 dollars.
http://www.sugarcreekcasino.net/lodging/
It was electric hook ups only and there were only 4 spots.  One of which was taken up by an Airstream trailer which belonged to one of the security people.

We enjoyed the sunset from our campground.  The grounds were well lit and patrolled by onsite security...

Road Buddha....
We walked to the truckstop and explored the area a little...
