There was a railroad, The Quincy, Omaha and Kansas City Railroad, that came out of North Kansas City, through the northland and on to Smithville. There are a few relics of it left. I heard that the Gash family gave the railroad a right of way, if the station there was named after their family. Thus the name Gashland.

Also at these old cemeteries or grave yards, many times the headstone will have the birthdate, the date of death and an exact figure as to their age. My guess is, that they did this because many people could not do the math.
