Route 66: Texas Panhandle to the Cadillac Ranch -- Getting Back on Track

We broke karma with Route 66 in a big way -- about nearly 20 miles to the south way.  Our excuse was that the motel choices in the eastern panhandle of Texas seemed nil.  We could've driven all the way to Amarillo, but we would have missed the eastern panhandle in the dark.  I think that Shamrock would have been a good choice, with it's '500 motel rooms' but there was some sort of concert or event that was really popular, and not a single place we called had any vacancies.  A lot of motels we called, when they answered their phones, would not take Tima.  So, the nearest place we could find was a Best Western in Clarendon, Texas.  The hotel was really nice, actually.

Today we decided to see if we can get out of the hotel room early and take a morning drive.  I hate the amount of time it takes to get in and out of rooms.

Much unlike the outer roads which much of the orignal route 66 roadbed has become, this texas road (TX 70) is extremely well maintained.  This road is even better than I-40.

We found ourselves on I-40 in some segments as the old route 66 is long gone or impassable or it dead ends in no where places.

Groom Texas is known for its leaning water tower and huge cross.
The tower is straight -- the world is crooked!
Hilly around here!

Amarillo Air Force Base

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarillo_Air_Force_Base
As you approach the east side of Amarillo, you pass through a ghost base which was abandoned by the federal goverment in the 1960's, Amarillo Air Force Base.  The old route was rerouted by the runway of the base, and you find yourself coming to a t intersection, then heading north to pick the route back up coming into town.  There are many old goverment buildings and hangars here, some being used, and others are decaying in abandonment.

The route into Amarillo passes through some splendid examples of old motels and signage from the 50's and 60's.
