Route 66 Adventure: Staunton Missouri to Baxter Springs Kansas

Route 66 Adventure:   Staunton Missouri to Baxter Springs Kansas
A Journey across our home state on old 66....

Yesterdays journey was from Staunton to Stanton....
Leaving our KOA....
Taking the outer road (US 66)
That's a lot of Bourbon!
Suyen doesn't quite grasp the concept....
That's sort of like it.... She's supposed to look like she is holding the Bourbon....
Time to grab some lunch....

Johns Modern Cabins
We brought our lunch from Cuba here to have a picnic in our camper.  We were hoping to pull right up to the cabins, but a state maintenance truck was blocking the way.  I found this empty stretch of 66 to be interesting in a timeless way...

The notice tells you to use common sense and you are responsible for your own self if something were to fall and hit your head...

Doggies on the abandoned westbound lanes of a forgotten segment of old 66...

This empty stretch of 66 has become somebody's worlds best driveway....

The motel next door which I think is now closed is pretty cool too..

We got some flowers for our picnic lunch...

Our next stop was Trail of Tears...

Hooker Cut on old 66 is like a Hollywood set.  It almost has a post apocalyptic look to it, like it was abandoned in place, especially if there is no other traffic on this stretch of road.  We have taken the segment it has bypassed the last time through here in 2016 past the Elbow Inn, which is closed due to the flooding in the spring....

West of Hooker Cut, the old route passes the entrance to Fort Leonard Wood, a major army base.  It has all the things associated with an army base including a surprising amount of traffic...

Springfield bound....since Missouri is our home state, we made up time here and didn't stop much.  The places we did stop were places we've never visited before....

We usually take the route through the middle of town, which is an older alignment.  Today we took the newer bypass around the north side of town to the east.

There's still a lot of nice things to see on the newer alignment.

We stayed around here in 2004, before moving to Railhaven...

We stayed at the city park.
https://www.travelks.com/listing/baxter-springs-city-campground/359/
It was pretty quiet.  Some local young people use this park to party at night, but otherwise it was really quiet.  We were the only ones who stayed here.  The police are supposed to send an officer to collect the fee, but they never came by.  This park had also suffered from the spring floods.

We settled down to a good dinner in the camper and a nice rest.  The temps were cool in the evening so we just kept the windows open.
